ZAO Zarubezhneftagaz, a subsidiary of OAO Gazprom, has started a programme of exploratory drilling works in the investment areas of Uzbekistan’s Ustyurt Region.
With this in mind, a second 2D seismic survey has been based in the region, the project documentation prepared and approved by the relevant authorities, and drilling of prospecting boreholes started.
Still within the framework of the first phase of geological surveys in the Ustyurt Region, it is planned to drill several dozen prospecting wells in all seven investment areas.
The start of geological survey works under the “Agreement concerning the main principles for conducting geological studies of underground resources in the investment area of the Ustyurt Region of Uzbekistan” was announced in January 2007.
The “Agreement concerning the main principles for conducting geological studies of underground resources in the investment area of the Ustyurt Region of Uzbekistan”, between OAO Gazprom and the National Holding Company Uzbekneftegaz, was signed on 25 January 2006.
The technical and economic basis for the project was prepared during 2006. In December 2006, OAO was issued with the licences necessary for allowing practical realisation of the works.
The agreement plans for geological exploration works to be conducted in seven investment areas: Aktumsuk, Kuanysh, Agyin, Nasambek, West Ugrin, Akchalak and Shakhpakhty, with a total area of some 35,000 sq km.
The total investment in the GEW is assessed at USD400 million.
