A gas-powered sport truck from the KAMAZ-Master Team will again take part in the Africa Eco Race 2017, an international marathon rally.
The race is to start on 31 December 2016 in Monaco and finish on 14 January 2017 near Dakar’s Lake Retba.
The Africa Eco Race is a key site for the gas-powered KAMAZ to test the technologies of using natural gas as engine fuel in extreme conditions. Due to the use of a gas-diesel mix, engine power increases at low rpm, which gives the crew an edge off-road.
In the 2017 season, the African marathon rally will be 6,500 kilometers long. The racing track will have the fewest possible number of liaisons, multi-obstacle special runs, two lap stages and a complicated roadbook. Most runs will start directly off bivouacs, and reaching them will require the participants’ maximum effort.
The KAMAZ-Master Team will be represented at the Africa Eco Race 2017 by two crews, led by Sergey Kupriyanov and Andrey Karginov.
The Gas-Powered KAMAZ project is supported by Gazprom to demonstrate the cost-effective and environmentally friendly use of natural gas for vehicles. Extensive work is being done in this area today. The gas fuelling infrastructure is expanding in Russia’s regions. “Natural gas as engine fuel has acquired its own brand – EcoGas”, says Sergey Kupriyanov, press secretary of the Chairman of the Gazprom Management Board and pilot of a gas-powered KAMAZ.
Gazprom International will be covering the key points of the Africa Eco Race 2017 marathon rally on its website.
The gas-powered KAMAZ is a special sport truck model which uses compressed natural gas as fuel. The vehicle was designed in 2013 by the KAMAZ-Master Team with the support of Gazprom and VTB Bank. The aim of the project is to demonstrate the advantages of using natural gas as engine fuel.
The use of natural gas as engine fuel for the gas-powered KAMAZ significantly reduces the exhaust of toxic substances into the environment and cuts fuel costs due to the low price of natural gas.
Production and sales of natural gas as engine fuel is one of Gazprom's priorities. A dedicated subsidiary – Gazprom Gas-Engine Fuel LLC – has been established to systemically develop the NGV market.
Gazprom Gas-Engine Fuel provides media coverage and promotional support for the participation of the gas-powered KAMAZ in sports events. The company is working to promote the use of natural gas as engine fuel.
The Africa Eco Race is an annual marathon rally that follows the legendary route of the Dakar rally: through Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal.
